Why we are being cautious at the Observatory

Observatories such as our own face particular challenges with a virus infection such as covid-19. If we use our clubhouse meeting room to its full capacity, there is no possibility of social distancing. Our domes and run-offs are by their very nature confined spaces with the only ventilation being from the open shutters and entrance doors. While it is true that telescopes on our pads have plenty of open space about them, there is the difficult question of eyepiece sharing by visitors. We are working hard on a technical solution to the eyepiece problem, by attaching a suitable video camera to a telescope and using a large screen to display the image. We are hoping to use this system with our largest Genesis dome, when it re-opens this autumn..
