Yuri's Night and Day (12th Apr 2014)

On Saturday April 12th Norwich Astronomical Society will be celebrating Yuri’s Night (and Day) at Seething Observatory. It will be 53 years to the day that Yuri Gagarin blasted off in a tiny capsule aboard the Vostok spacecraft to become the first man in space and the first to orbit the earth.

Activities for young people from 2pm, with;

Solar viewing through special solar scopes,

  • demonstration of nuclear fusion using marshmallows,

  • Scale of the universe activity.

  • Demonstration of scientists find planets around distant stars

  • Rocket building and decorating

  • Rocket launching

We will also have a real Russian Spacesuit on site, A Sokul KV-2 rescue suit courtesy of Heinlein Education Trust

The children's event finishes at 6pm.

The evening events start at 7pm and visitors can hear from Stem Ambassador and Gagarin Expert Victoria Southgate author of Yuri Gagarin – The First Spaceman who will be bringing along the UK Space Mascot CASSiE @SpaceMascotUK for young people.

Adult talks from 7.30pm

Talks vary in length but generally last approximately 40 minutes for adults and 20 for children and are aimed at those with a general interest in astronomy.

Admission is Adults £3.50 Adult members £2.00 All Children £1.50 Teas, coffee and cold drinks are available and there will be a chance to observe through the telescopes, if the skies are clear.
